Martial Arts

There are many forms of Martial Arts across the world that can trace their origins back to a style of a teacher or instructure, known as a 'Master'. Many are local to an area but many over the years have made it to a more mainstream audience with some provided throughout Swale.

Each of the classes or sessions will have regular training organised during the week that will help you improve your skill and understanding within the activity; generally gradings or tests of your skills will show your progression with and competitions available if you wish. Some of the forms are listed below with local providers that can help you get active in across the borough.

TAEKWONDO

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that has a grading system to ensure participants train and compete against similar levels and has an emphasis on head-height kicks, jumping and spinning kicks, and fast kicking techniques. The Governing Body of the Sport in Britain is British Taekwondo.

JUDO

Judo is an Olympic sport that has a grading system to help participants develop and or compete against others at the same levels and the National Governing Body for Judo in Great Britain is British Judo

KARATE

Karate was originally developed and refined in Japan using the participants are unarmed and use their hands and feet for blocking and striking. Gradings are used to develop and ensure participants train and compete against others of a similar level and the Governing Body in Britain is Karate Union of Great Britain.

We haven't carried out checks on the clubs and organisations that are listed and as a participant you should check you are happy with their safety and quality of its activity provision prior to participating with them. Don't wait until the start of your first session to ask questions about their qualifications, experience or the level of activities as the  coach/instructor will be busy planning the session and may not have the information with them; but do ask before your first session and all should be happy to answer your questions.

If you provide opportunities for residents or visitors to get involved in Martial Arts and would like your club or organisation to be listed then email Active Swale and we can get your details uploaded.
