Talk - Workhouses with Helen Allinson at Sheppey Little Theatre

Helen Allinson talks about Life in the Victorian Kentish Workhouse. The talk tells how union workhouses were set up in 1835. The harsh design of the buildings, work inside the institution including stone breaking and oakum picking. The discipline imposed, the monotonous diet and the outbreaks of infectious diseases. Examples given are all from Kentish workhouse records.
