Kent Wildlife Trust - Open Gardens in Swale

Kent Wildlife Trust 'Wild About Gardens' series of Open Gardens gives you the opportunity to walk around stunning gardens across Kent that have been planted and maintained to encourage and benefit wildlife but also to provide a colourful, welcoming haven in which to relax and socialise.

The 'Open Gardens' are all different, meaning that you'll get to experience a range of techniques used to create nature-friendly gardens. Get some inspiration to start your own wildlife pond, create a wildflower section, plant fruit and vegetable beds, and lots more!

Timed visits will allow plenty of time and space to chat with the garden owner and experienced Kent Wildlife Trust Volunteers about how this has been achieved and get tips and advice for developing your own garden. There will be an opportunity to purchase plants donated by our volunteers.

Booking is advisable to guarantee your slot.

Sunday 19th - Location: Nature Friendly Open Garden, Cliff Gardens Minster On Sea, ME12 3QY

A medium sized coastal garden with sea views containing flower beds, mature trees, meadow areas, a fruit and vegetable plot, a pond and varied wildlife habitats.

Visit a garden which is designed to be wildlife friendly as well as attractive and a pleasant outdoor living space. You will be able to see the animals which live in the pond.

This is an opportunity to get advice from the owners and Kent Wildlife Trust volunteers about encouraging wildlife into your garden.

You will be able to purchase plants to take home to help you do this.

Timed visits will allow plenty of time and space to chat with the experienced volunteers. Numbers limited to 20 people per session. Pre booking advisable to guarantee your slot. Bookings will close at noon on the day before the event & participants will receive an email with more details 24 hours before their time slot.

We are running 3 time slots:

11.30am-1.00pm

1.00pm-2.30pm

2.30pm-4.00pm

Sunday 7th August Location: Nature Friendly Open Garden, Doddington, near Faversham

A large garden being developed to offer numerous beneficial features for wildlife. A mix of formal and informal habitats to suit the tidy and untidy gardener.

Part garden, part nature reserve, visit a 2.5 acre garden that is managed with wildlife in mind. Formal and informal areas provide different habitats for the various creatures which use the garden. Come along and get ideas for your own space and discuss them with the on-hand Wild About Gardens volunteers.

There will be an opportunity to purchase plants at our plant stall.

Timed visits will allow plenty of time and space to chat with the experienced volunteers.

2.00pm-4.00pm

Sunday 25th September - Location: Nature Friendly Open Garden, South Road, Faversham, Kent, ME12 7LY

A charming urban garden used by the whole family in a sustainable and planet friendly way.

Visit an urban garden which has been pesticide free for the last 20 years. See how the family are experimenting with various ways to make their garden sustainable and planet friendly.

See examples of their experimental forest gardening and no dig techniques, homemade compost and plant food plus imaginative methods of re–using and recycling a variety of things.

The garden is planted in an attractive way and maintained to benefit both human and wildlife visitors with a colourful mix of trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, herbs, grasses, wildflowers, fruit and vegetables. Small wildlife ponds.

Talk to the owners and Kent Wildlife Trust volunteers -get tips and advice for developing your own garden. There will be an opportunity to purchase plants donated by our volunteers.

The garden is within walking distance of Faversham town centre. There will also be an opportunity for you to explore some of the community planting being carried out in the vicinity by Swale in Bloom volunteers
