The Leas and Sittingbourne parkruns

On September 28th we welcomed the latest parkrun UK event to The Leas, Minster on the Isle of Sheppey with the 5km route along the seafront providing a free activity for residents and visitors. Like all the parkruns across the globe it starts at 09:00 every Saturday morning and is managed by a team of local volunteers.

The Leas parkrun was jointly funded by Swale Borough Council, Minster-on-Sea Parish Council and the Rotary Club of Minster-on-Sea; it’s great to see local organisations coming together to help establish opportunities for people to get active. This event will add to the established Sittingbourne parkrun in Milton Creek, look out Faversham it’s your turn next!

Showing the Councils continued support for the well established Sittingbourne parkrun 15 staff and family members volunteered to support the event by giving their time to 'Takeover' the parkrun on the 14th September and work with the recognised Event Director.

Arriving at 07:30 two of us help set up the course before the rest of our colleagues joined us at 08:30 for a briefing and allocation of roles. Then a quick briefing for the 205 participants and the event started promptly at 09:00; within an hour full of cheering and clapping the tail walkers crossed the finish line and the event was cleared and packed away. A quick coffee later and the results were completed and uploaded for all to see their results online with 21 first timers and 46 recording best times in the beautiful sunny morning, they even gave us a cheer at the start!

'Oh Wow Amazing, Thank You Swale BC.'

'Thanks SBC.'

'Thank you all for volunteering and God bless you all.'

'Thank you everyone, had a nice run'

'Thanks everyone'

'Thanks to the marshals and thanks for the 50th parkrun milestone mention'

'Thanks to everyone who helped out. Really enjoyed it this morning.' :)

It doesn’t have to be a work place to do a takeover and if you can get between 15 and 20 volunteers together from your organisation then take a look at the parkrun UK website and search their ‘event’ page to find your local event. Hats off to the other organisations below that have also taken over the Sittingbourne parkrun -

  • DS Smith
  • Sittingbourne Striders
  • Beginner2Runners
  • Team Phoenix Foundation
