Think Green & Light Up Sheerness Sky!

The Sheerness Annual Lantern Parade has been a popular feature for the Sheerness Christmas Light Switch On for the last 16 years, and this year will be no different! Taking place on Saturday 30 November, this is a must for your diary!

Brightening up those dreary Winter nights, each parade has held a theme from fish, boats and ships, Indian culture, Mermaids and Monsters, and many more.

With the support of an Environment Grant from Swale Borough Council, Big Fish Arts and Plastic Free Sheerness have teamed up to create a fun Lantern Parade for 2019 centred around the theme, “Recycling, Caring for the Environment and Climate Change”, getting the community involved in taking care of the environment around them, and being aware of the dangers around plastic getting into the sea, especially as Sheerness is a coastal community.

Beach cleans and local litter picks will be organised to collect litter, with bottles, bags, etc. used as materials for the Lanterns.

There will be workshops and events with local community groups such as Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, schools and after school clubs where the Lanterns used in the Parade will be created.

On the day, the Parade is led by a Samba band through Sheerness High Street creating a fun and lively parade that the whole community can be proud to be a part of.

Every Lantern that is created is yours to keep, to decorate your home or garden, and then can be used in Lantern Parades in future years.

To be a part of this wonderful community event, get involved in the beach cleans and litter picks, or to simply find out more information regarding the lantern parade, contact Chris Reed at Big Fish Arts/Rose Street Cottage on 07775712306.
