Organised annually by the Kentish Sail Association, the race celebrates the rich heritage of the trading and fishing craft that once filled the Thames Estuary and north Kent coastline. Many of the vessels taking part are more than 100 years old and represent an important part of Britain’s maritime history.

The Swale Estuary, Faversham and North Kent Coast
One of the highlights of the summer maritime calendar returns to the Swale on Saturday 25 July 2026, as the 53rd Swale Smack & Sailing Barge Match brings together a spectacular fleet of traditional vessels from Kent, Essex and beyond.
The race course stretches from the entrance to Faversham Creek out towards the wind farm, across into Herne Bay and back again, offering visitors the chance to enjoy wonderful views of the fleet under sail.
Around 30 to 40 traditional sailing barges and smacks are expected to take part, creating a rare and beautiful sight that evokes the age of sail and the working estuary of years gone by.
